University of Michigan C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital
was named one of America’s top hospitals, in

2009 U.S. News & World Report.

D.R.E.A.M. has partnered with the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital to fund research of pediatric endocrinology and childhood diabetes. The fund will be administered by Director of Pediatric Endocrinology, Dr. Ram Menon, at University of Michigan. Monies raised by D.R.E.A.M. will be donated to U-M to aid in various research projects in promising areas, selected by Dr. Menon.

D.R.E.A.M. has already purchased a camera for microscopes in the Imaging/Microscopy Core Laboratory of the Department of Pediatrics, operated under the direction of Dr. Peter Dempsey, Associate Professor Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases.

In February, the Kramer family visited the lab to check out their purchase and viewed Dr. Dempsey’s presentation of his research. On the same visit, the families also saw the mice that are used in the important research conducted by Dr. Menon and his staff. Dr. Menon’s research includes experiments to see how blood sugar is affected by different foods.

A key objective of D.R.E.A.M. is to raise money to help fund the very important research on mice, in the hopes of discovering and formulating new and innovative therapies that will ultimately result in a cure for diabetes. Funds raised will be used to assist in the purchase, housing and feeding of lab mice.

Some mice are on the “Subway” or low-fat diet, and others are on the “McDonald’s” or high-fat diet.
